Definition: Lack of mastery means that students have not yet mastered a particular skill or concept. When educators know that there is a lack of mastery, they can intentionally plan learning opportunities that offer students additional chances to engage with the concepts or practice the skills to develop their level of mastery. It is important not to confuse lack of mastery with insufficient evidence of mastery.
